With the onset of spring, the Connecticut Department of Transportation (CTDOT) is urging drivers to prioritize safety. As warmer weather and extended daylight hours lead to increased outdoor activities such as walking and biking, CTDOT highlights the importance of heightened awareness on the road.

Preliminary data from 2024 indicates that there were over 1,400 crashes involving pedestrians and bicyclists on Connecticut roads. These incidents resulted in 67 fatalities and nearly 250 serious injuries.

“With spring here we know more people will be embracing outdoor activities. We remind drivers that roads are shared and used by everyone, so stay alert and follow all traffic laws to ensure everybody stays safe,” said Connecticut Department of Transportation Commissioner Garrett Eucalitto. “By being cautious, respectful, and staying aware, we can create a safer environment for all travelers.”

To promote a safer environment for everyone, CTDOT has issued several safety guidelines:

For drivers:
– Obey speed limits in parking areas and access roads.
– Be prepared to stop for pedestrians, especially at crosswalks.
– Slow down when approaching groups of people.
– Stay alert for unpredictable movements.
– Avoid distractions, obey traffic laws, and drive sober.

For pedestrians:
– Walk facing traffic and remain vigilant for distracted drivers.
– Form a single-file line when walking in groups to maximize safety.
– Use marked crosswalks whenever available.

For bicyclists:
– Ride on the right side in the direction of traffic while wearing bright clothing or reflective gear to increase visibility.
– Wear a properly fitted helmet correctly on every ride to help prevent head injury.
– Follow road rules as though you were driving a car by obeying stop signs and traffic signals.
