The Connecticut Department of Transportation (CTDOT) urged all road users on March 19 to remain alert and prioritize safety as warmer weather brings more pedestrians, joggers, and bicyclists onto the state’s roads.
This message comes as preliminary data shows a concerning number of crashes involving pedestrians. In 2024, there were over 1,400 such incidents resulting in 62 fatalities. Preliminary figures for 2025 indicate 65 pedestrian deaths, and as of March 18, seven pedestrians have died in Connecticut in 2026.
“After a long winter, it’s natural for people to want to get outside for fun, recreation, or exercise. With increased outdoor activities comes increased risks to bicyclists and pedestrians,” said Connecticut Department of Transportation Commissioner Garrett Eucalitto. “We’re urging everyone to slow down, stay focused, drive sober, and remember that safety never takes a season off. Do your part to keep everyone on the road safe.”
CTDOT reminded drivers that state law gives pedestrians the right of way at many crosswalks and intersections. The department encouraged drivers to reduce speed in areas with heavy foot traffic, be prepared to stop at crosswalks, watch carefully when turning, avoid distractions or impairment while driving, and use extra caution near neighborhoods and schools. Pedestrians are advised to use sidewalks where available, cross at marked locations after making eye contact with drivers, stay visible during low-light hours, avoid distractions like texting while walking, and walk facing traffic if no sidewalk is present. Bicyclists should ride with traffic wearing bright or reflective clothing and helmets while following all road rules.
