The Connecticut Department of Transportation announced on Mar. 27 that it will hold a hybrid public information meeting about planned improvements to the platforms at Union Station in New Haven. The meeting is scheduled for Tuesday, April 14, at 6:00 p.m. at the Ives Performing Arts Space in the Ives Main Library, located at 133 Elm Street.
The purpose of this meeting is to give members of the public and local community an opportunity to comment or ask questions about the proposed project. According to instructions provided by CTDOT, details on accessing the meeting and submitting feedback can be found at portal.ct.gov/DOTNewHaven301-522.
Connecticut Department of Transportation Project Manager Jonathan Kang said, “The purpose of this project is to rehabilitate the existing platforms and construct a new canopy which will increase the overall longevity of the station’s service to passengers and provide shelter during various weather conditions.” Kang also encouraged participation: “We encourage the public to attend the meeting and share any feedback that may assist the team as the design continues.”
Plans for Union Station include replacing high-level platforms and building a new canopy structure for passenger protection from weather. Additional work will address rail, power, station utilities, as well as pedestrian tunnel, stairway, and elevator upgrades. No right-of-way impacts are expected from these changes.
Construction is expected to begin in spring 2029 if funding becomes available and permits are approved. The estimated cost for construction is approximately $402 million with federal and state funds anticipated for support.
