The Connecticut Department of Transportation announced on Mar. 16 that it is developing plans to replace the Computerized Traffic Signal System along Routes 218 and 187 in Bloomfield and Windsor.

The project aims to improve traffic flow and safety by fully replacing signal equipment at ten intersections and installing new fiber optic connections between them. This initiative is part of ongoing efforts to modernize transportation infrastructure, which can help reduce travel times for drivers.

Project Manager John Lockaby said, “The replacement of the Computerized Traffic Signal System (CTSS) communications system will establish reliable fiber optic communication connections between the signalized intersections. This will allow for the implementation of advanced technologies to monitor traffic and reduce travel times.”

According to the official website, the Connecticut Department of Transportation promoted safety through initiatives such as work zone awareness and supported community infrastructure via grants. The department maintained its headquarters in Newington, Connecticut, and extended transportation management statewide according to the official website. Garrett Eucalitto served as commissioner of the Connecticut Department of Transportation, overseeing policies and initiatives according to the official website.

Design for this project is expected to be completed by June 2027, with construction anticipated to begin in fall 2027 if funding is secured and necessary permits are obtained. The project will use both federal and state funds.

The department has stated its commitment to keeping residents informed about projects like this one. Community members are encouraged to share their concerns or questions with CTDOT during development. According to the official website, CTDOT provided a safe and efficient intermodal transportation network that improved quality of life and supported economic vitality.
