The Connecticut Department of Transportation (CTDOT) announced on Apr. 8 that it is developing plans to rehabilitate or replace Bridge No. 00973, which carries Route 44 over Spruce Brook in New Hartford.
The project aims to address deficiencies with the current bridge structure and ensure a safe crossing for travelers both on and below the bridge. The department said the goal is to maintain major bridge elements at a National Bridge Inventory Condition Rating of “Fair” (5) or better, as well as bring the bridge into compliance with CTDOT load rating requirements.
Design work for the project is expected to be completed by December 2028, with construction anticipated to begin in spring 2029 if the project receives approval, funding becomes available, and all necessary right-of-way and environmental permits are obtained. Funding will come from both federal and state sources.
CTDOT encourages public involvement during projects like this one. “It is important that the community share its concerns with CTDOT to assist in the project’s development,” according to the announcement. Residents can contact Gregory Funk, Transportation Principal Engineer, for questions or comments about State Project No. PP116-0006.
