The Connecticut Department of Transportation announced on Apr. 17 that it will hold a virtual public information meeting regarding the planned replacement of Bridge No. 01846, which carries Route 222 (Hill Road) over the Naugatuck Railroad in Thomaston. The meeting is scheduled for Thursday, May 21 at 7:00 p.m., and registration is required to attend via Zoom.
The purpose of the meeting is to give residents and local stakeholders an opportunity to learn about the project and provide feedback or ask questions about its design and impact. A question-and-answer session will follow the presentation, which will be recorded for later viewing.
“This project will replace the current structure to ensure safe, long-term crossing of the Naugatuck Railroad as well as improve vertical clearance to the tracks,” said Connecticut Department of Transportation Project Manager Christopher Patria. “We encourage the public to attend this meeting to share their feedback with the CTDOT project team to incorporate into the design.”
No permanent right-of-way impacts are expected from this project, though temporary access within railroad property will be needed during construction. Construction is anticipated to begin in fall 2028 depending on funding availability, rights-of-way acquisition, and permit approvals. The estimated cost for construction is approximately $11 million, with federal funds covering about 80 percent and state funds covering about 20 percent.
According to the official website, Garrett Eucalitto serves as commissioner of CTDOT and oversees policies supporting transportation safety initiatives such as work zone awareness programs and community infrastructure grants statewide. The department maintains its headquarters in Newington but extends transportation management throughout Connecticut according to its official website. CTDOT also provides a safe intermodal network that aims to improve quality of life while supporting economic vitality according to official sources.
CTDOT supports community connectivity through grant programs and engagement with contractors and consultants across Connecticut according to its official website. Residents who lack internet access can listen by phone or request mailed materials from Project Manager Patria. Language assistance services are available upon request at no cost.
A two-week comment period follows after the May meeting; comments may be submitted by June 4 via email or phone referencing Project No. 0140-0180.
