The Connecticut Department of Transportation announced on May 5 that major rehabilitation work will begin on the northbound span of the Gold Star Memorial Bridge, a key Interstate 95 crossing over the Thames River between New London and Groton.

The project is significant because it aims to improve safety, reliability, and long-term performance for one of Connecticut’s busiest bridges. The bridge serves as a vital route for both people and freight in the Northeast, carrying more than 120,000 vehicles daily across its two spans.

This phase includes strengthening and repairing structural steel, replacing bearings, installing a new bridge deck and joints, repairing concrete substructures, upgrading barriers and fencing, installing new lighting, replacing overhead sign structures, and painting the superstructure. According to Governor Ned Lamont: “This project shows Connecticut is tackling complex infrastructure challenges and delivering results for the southeastern region of our state. Upgrading this bridge restores access for oversized vehicles and strengthens a key freight corridor… I applaud the advocacy of Connecticut’s Congressional delegation for collaborating with our administration to secure these important funds so we could move this project forward.”

Commissioner Garrett Eucalitto said: “This phase brings significant construction to one of the busiest highways in the region, and we are asking the public for patience as this work moves forward. Drivers should slow down, stay alert, and move over to give our crews the space they need to work safely. I thank Governor Lamont and our federal, state, and local partners for their continued support of this major multi-year infrastructure project.” Senator Richard Blumenthal added: “The Gold Star Memorial Bridge will be the gold standard – in strength, efficiency, and beauty. Millions who use this vital artery will benefit from the state-of-the-art reconstruction underway…” Senator Chris Murphy said: “I’m proud our federal delegation was able to secure these funds from the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law…” Congressman Joe Courtney highlighted that repairs would “ensure the Gold Star Bridge is ready to safely carry more vehicles over the Thames River each day” while supporting economic growth in southeastern Connecticut.

A new traffic pattern will start on Saturday May 30; northbound traffic will shift onto part of southbound lanes with reduced speed limits during construction. The entire phase is expected to finish by 2030 with funding split between federal (90%) and state (10%) sources.

According to the official website, Garrett Eucalitto serves as commissioner overseeing statewide transportation management policies at CTDOT. The department promotes safety through initiatives such as work zone awareness campaigns while providing an efficient intermodal network that supports community connectivity via grants.

Looking ahead, officials say these investments will reduce detours for oversized vehicles while supporting reliable travel along I-95.
