The Connecticut Department of Transportation announced on April 9 that temporary adjustments to train service will take place on the Hartford Line from Monday, April 21 through Friday, October 30, 2026. Several weekday CTrail and Amtrak trains between Hartford and Springfield, Massachusetts will be replaced by bus service during this period.
These changes are being made to allow for infrastructure improvements along the corridor. The department said that work includes a track improvement project at the new Windsor Locks Station site, installation of new interlockings, drainage improvements, and maintenance and safety upgrades at several rail grade crossings. Weekend train service will not be affected.
“These infrastructure projects are a vital step in modernizing the Hartford Line,” said Connecticut Department of Transportation Bureau Chief of Public Transportation Jeffrey Gonneville. “A new Windsor Locks station, upgraded track infrastructure, and safer crossings will deliver more reliable and accessible service for everyone who depends on this line. We thank the public for their patience as this work is completed.”
Train fares will remain effective on substitute buses. Passengers must purchase either a CTrail or Amtrak ticket to board these buses. Southbound bus departure times are earlier than regular train departures at stations including Hartford, Windsor, Windsor Locks, and Springfield. Signage at platforms will direct passengers to bus pick up and drop off locations.
Amtrak train 490 will operate as a bus along its entire route from New Haven Union Station to Springfield Union Station during this period. Riders can visit HartfordLine.com or Amtrak.com for updated information or sign up for alerts about schedule changes.
