David X. Sullivan, United States Attorney for the District of Connecticut, announced on Apr. 10 that Luis Peterson Rohr Ferreira Borges, a 25-year-old Brazilian citizen residing illegally in the United States, was sentenced to nine months in prison for assaulting a federal officer.

Ferreira Borges’s sentencing follows an incident during his arrest by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officers on June 25, 2025. The case highlights ongoing efforts by federal authorities to address violent encounters during immigration enforcement operations.

According to court documents and statements made in court, Ferreira Borges was apprehended by law enforcement near Zion Street in Hartford while he had an outstanding arrest warrant from the Department of Homeland Security related to his immigration status. During the arrest and subsequent transport, Ferreira Borges resisted officers and acted aggressively. He kicked, flailed, screamed obscenities at officers inside a government vehicle, threatened one officer verbally with physical harm, attempted to bite another officer who tried to restrain him, and spat on the driver.

Ferreira Borges has been detained since his arrest and pleaded guilty on January 22, 2026. He faces further immigration proceedings after completing his sentence. The investigation was conducted by Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) along with ICE Enforcement and Removal Operations; Assistant U.S. Attorney Neeraj N. Patel prosecuted the case.

The U.S. Attorney for the District of Connecticut prosecutes federal crimes and manages civil cases for the United States within Connecticut through offices located in New Haven, Hartford and Bridgeport while employing about 68 assistant attorneys and 57 support staff members according to its official website. The office also advances justice initiatives intended to enhance quality of life for state residents according to its official website.

This prosecution is part of Operation Take Back America—a nationwide initiative led by the Department of Justice aiming at countering illegal immigration as well as criminal organizations.
